Humane Animal Rescue Team


  What is HART?

HART (Humane Animal Rescue Team) is a not-for-profit organization established under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. HART is comprised entirely of concerned volunteers. There are no paid staff members and minimal administrative costs. All donations to HART are tax-deductible and used to keep the client's cost of surgery low. Donations are vital to the continued success of the Spay/Neuter Program. Send your donations to:

Organization History

Since its inception in February 1994, HART has implemented and operated successful spay/neuter programs in Hamilton and the surrounding counties.  HART initially implemented a spay/neuter program for animals adopted from the Chattanooga Humane Educational Society.  This program was later expanded to include the City of East Ridge’s Animal Shelter.  From 1994 to 1997, over 1,400 animals were spayed/neutered under HART’s program.  In 1997, by mutual consent, the Humane Society assumed operation of its spay/neuter program and HART implemented a community wide spay/neuter program while continuing its program with the East Ridge Shelter.

The community-based program grew steadily for the first 3 years (see chart below).

The Goals of HART

To reduce the numbers of unwanted dogs and cats and end the destruction of healthy animals due to pet over-population in Chattanooga and the surrounding area;

To improve public awareness of the crisis of pet overpopulation and encourage all pet owners to spay/neuter their pet(s); and

To promote responsible pet ownership by encouraging everyone to spay or neuter their pets.
