Tennessee
Animal Friendly Grant
In November 2000, HART was
awarded one of the three initial Animal-Friendly grants awarded
by the Tennessee Department of Health to support our spay/neuter
program. The grants are funded from proceeds from the
Tennessee Animal-Friendly license plates. The Animal-Friendly
license plates are very popular and have generated over $600,000
in support of spay/neuter programs statewide. HART received
$10,000 from the fund for an eight month initial operating period
for the grant (November 2000 through June 2001), HART performed
544 spays and neuters, including 72 under the Special Needs
Program. The Special Needs program is designed to assist
pet owners in extreme financial circumstances and also provides
spays and neuters for feral cat colonies. The grant was
continued by the state for the period July 1, 2001 through June
30, 2002 with the funding increased to $12,500.
In addition, we served 54 families
in 2001 and 86 families in 2002 in North Georgia and Northwest
Alabama (not included in the totals above - they are not eligible
under the Tennessee grant). The Georgia and Alabama residents
are supported through fundraising.
Grand Total
All Families Served November 1, 2000 to June 30, 2002:
1,809!!!
Unfortunately, HART receives
less funding under the grant each year. New funding sources
and/or fundraising are necessary to keep the program going.
